History (Continued)

Needing a source to contact JPL retirees, Herman was informed by JPL that the volunteer effort that he envisioned might be possible if it proved to be popular with retirees and was sponsored by a formal retirees organization. He then solicited Joe’s support for a plan to organize retired technical experts to establish a new medical engineering project with the assistance of volunteer retirees. The project later became known as Volunteer Professionals for Medical Advancement (VPMA). Please refer to Volunteer Opportunities on the ARC Home Page.

Working together, Herman and Joe were joined by many others to help bring our organization from concept to reality. Originally the “informal organizing group” wanted to style their association after the Caltech Management Club sponsored by the JPL Director’s Office. An IOM regarding some issues and requesting management review and disposition indicated JPL had three main concerns:

(l) the association patterned after the management club sponsored by the JPL Director’s Office,

(2) the inclusion of active employees as members, and

(3) the technical activities by ARC.
