HISTORY

ARC was formally established on June 22, 1984 to provide support and social activities to retirees from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

The interests and efforts of two retired individuals, Herman Bank and Joe Koukol and their interactions with Dave Shaw, manager of the JPL section responsible for retirement activities, resulted in the formation of the retirement organization.

Joe had already done much of the groundwork to establish the concept, function and activities projected for ARC. He had surveyed CIT/JPL employees to determine sufficient interest in a retirement association. Moreover, he contacted many aerospace retirement organizations to gain information on their organizational details such as by-laws, newsletters and history. Retirees were mainly interested in keeping in touch with friends and co-workers. The effort resulted later in the current charter and framework for ARC organization and function.

Herman Bank recalls that while he was still working at JPL, he was involved in a JPL-Discretionary-funded medical project that was active from approximately 1972 to about 1975. This activity which JPL could no longer sponsor was very important to Herman. Upon retirement in l983 Herman decided to try to accomplish the objectives of this discontinued activity with the aid of a staff of volunteers, primarily JPL retirees.
